Ecological engineering (EE) involves both efforts to increase floral biodiversity to provide resources to natural enemies and also efforts to reduce insecticide use, especiallly in the first 40 days, to conserve the biodiversity.
The first EE experiment was conducted in Jin Hua where plants such as sesame, Zizania, and nectar-rich flowers were planted on the bunds. At the same time, insecticide sprays were reduced to just one from the normal five sprays. Predators, such as frogs and spiders and bees increased and parasitoids, such as egg parasitoids, increased and ecosystem services were restored.
